'Swan' Mounts - Current Trend in Racing

If you have a passion for motorsport you may have noticed in recent times that the rear wings on race cars look slightly different. The large wings are, on an increasing number of designs, mounted from the top of the wing (the pressure side) as opposed to the traditional way of mounting on the lower surface (the suction side). Why is this?

Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis or CFD as you’ve probably heard of it, has found that mounting a rear wing from the top surface can potentially produce more downforce as the lower surface is free from obstruction – and importantly flow separation as flow separation causes an undesirable reduction in downforce. There is a small penalty in excess drag and weight, however we have kept our design as thin and streamlined as possible to help overcome this.

We have designed a new CNC machined Alloy swan mount, primarily for use with our own wing kits, but also suitable for wings from other manufactures. Our swan mounts feature an array of holes allowing for precise AoA adjust in 20 increments.

Compared to other designs, our swan wing mounts go one step further and give you the option to adjust the height of the mount itself; cut lines are machined allowing you to accurately cut the mounts to size while still fitting perfectly into the swan mount bases;

Soon we will be offering extra-long ‘Swan’ style wing mounts that are specially designed for the Lotus Elise/Exige however could be fitted to a variety of vehicles. They will feature a 300mm extension to the base allowing the mount (if desired) to travel through the boot/trunk lid to the floor. This allows for a much stronger solution. Watch this space…
